VDO, "POT METAL" GEARS

IMPORTANT NOTES:

These pot metal replacements are machined from Deldrin plastic which is far superior to the original pot metal and will last the life of the speedometer. (Pot metal, also called potmetal, is a soft metal alloy of lead and zinc.)

The pot metal replacement gears all have 20 teeth, but come in three thicknesses. Most Porsche and Mercedes odometers use the thickest one. You can order all three and return two for full credit if you want to have the gears before you pull the speedo. Or if you can wait for the parts, but don't have a micrometer to measure the thickness, place the gears on a flat surface and compare to a small stack of coins. Use a straight edge across the odometer gear and stack for accuracy:

0.170 inch, the thickness of 3 pennies.

0.194 inch, the thickness of 2 nickles and a penny.

0.241 inch, the thichness of 2 nickles and 2 dimes.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
If your speedometer and odometer both do not work it could be a problem in the car with the Vehicle Speed Sensor, called the VSS for short. This device sends pulses to the speedometer head (and cruise control) when the car is moving.
For cars with cruise control you can try a simple test. If your cruise control works it means the VSS is ok. Most likely it is the speedometer head, but could be the wiring from the VSS to the speedometer head. For absolute proof the car should be jacked up and the wheels turned while viewing the VSS input signal with a scope at the input connector to the speedometer, but nine times out of ten you have a bad speedometer. (On some cars a voltmeter will work. Just look for a fluctuating voltage on the VSS output when the wheels are turned.) If it is the speedometer head we would be glad to complete the repair for you, with a one year warranty. Just send the speedometer to us for repair. For a price quote email us at ecs@CarRadio.com
For cars without cruise you need to do the test with a scope as mentioned above. If you don't have a scope you can also send us the speedometer for a inexpensive bench test.
